In this photograph, two men share a bench in a subway. The head of the sleeping man, a white American, has fallen back so that it catches the light; the other man, an African-American, sits in the shadows. The uneven lighting of the two men seems to mirror the unequal opportunities that they have in American society.
Evans used his camera to record American life. He focused on the daily activities of ordinary people, in cities and on the farm, as well as their houses, belongings, places of work, schools, and churches.
